Ecuadorian Christmas combines indigenous and Catholic traditions. The season begins with Novena processions nine days before Christmas. Families create elaborate pesebres (nativity scenes). On Christmas Eve, many attend Misa del Gallo, followed by a feast of turkey or roast pig, and pristiños (honey-drizzled pastries). In Cuenca, the Pase del Niño Viajero parade features children dressed as biblical characters. Gift-giving often occurs on Christmas Day or Día de los Reyes.
