Why does it say “por” in one sentence and “para” in another?

The simple answer to that question is because there are certain instances where we use “por” in Spanish and others where we have to use “para”.

• “Por” is used to talk about a reason, cause, or motivation for something 
• “Para” is used to talk about a goal or a purpose of an action

• Use por when you are talking about the way you travel (by car, train, plane, etc.) and communicate (letter, phone, email, etc).

If you want to sound even more like a native while talking about your opinion you can also say “para mi“. That means “according to me” or “in my opinion“.

• In their opinion, living in Spain is very nice

This is less common but still is worth learning so that you can understand it when you hear it.

• For being 11 years old, she is a very good athlete
  Para tener 11 años, ella es muy buena deportista

Note: In this case, English uses the gerund (the verbs end in “-ing”). On the other hand, Spanish uses the infinitive. Take a closer look at what we mean below:

“Por” and “para” are not interchangeable. That’s why there are specific rules for when to use each one.

More often than not, a native speaker will be able to understand you if you use the wrong word. But, sometimes getting your “por” and “para” the wrong way around can completely change the meaning of the sentence:

• Por and para can be used in questions

You’ve probably already learned that “¿por qué?” means “why?” and that you can answer using “porque” which means “because”.

But you can also use “por” and “para” to form more interesting questions and answers. We’ll now see how you can use these words to express reason or motivation and purpose.

Note: If you’re still unsure about the use of “por” and “para” in questions, you should follow the lead of the person asking the questions. If someone asks you a question containing “por”, your answer should contain “por” as well. And the same is true if they use “para”.
